Welcome to The Eastbourne Society

Few people, residents or visitors, leave Eastbourne without a feeling of regret. It is a town of individual character more attractive than most, and set in fine countryside.

Today, when the face of the area is changing more dramatically than ever before, it is essential to ensure that its individuality is not destroyed. At the same time positive efforts will always be needed to realise its full potential as a pleasant place in which to live and work.

The Eastbourne Society was formed to take a practical part in the fulfilment of these aims. It believes that nothing but the best is good enough for the area and its people. Independent of any other organization, it speaks without fear, favour or prejudice. Its only concern is with the welfare of the town and its surroundings.

There are difficult choices to be made between development and conservation, technology and tradition. Groups like ours, that keep a watchful eye on change and progress, have managed to help town planners and councillors balance some of these conflicting pressures. But we need your help for the future to make sure that we and our children can still enjoy the amenities and charming aspects of the town from Beachy Head to Pevensey Bay and out into the countryside.

It is only with a strong voice, and by means of concerted action and presence by residents, that changes can be brought about in planning and development, also when changes are necessary to conserve and improve the town’s unique features.

You want to protect those things that are most important to you - but it isn't just your house, garden and contents that you value: your neighbourhood is important too.

Our overall objective is to improve the amenity and utility value of the town and district for local people, preserving the character and features of our inheritance and improving the area to meet the needs of the future. Life changes fast these days and we intend to remain vigilant so it doesn't leave us behind. We will act whenever ‘one-size-fits-all’ policies are proposed that threaten the town's character. There are some difficult challenges ahead, like resolving traffic problems for drivers and pedestrians, and rebalancing initiatives so local people are more important than visitors.

We are open to all and welcome people of all ages to join us: whether as active voices on our committees, participants in our meetings or just avid readers of our newsletters. For a modest annual fee you will be helping to look after our town and you will be warmly welcomed to join in our activities in any area you may choose.
