New edition of Nine Town Walks


The Society has now updated its series of walks aimed at both visitor and resident alike. The walks are suggested as leisure trips through some of the interesting areas of the town.

Walk 1. Old Town, including Manor Gardens, Borough Lane, St Mary's Church, Motcombe Gardens, Ocklynge, Lamb Inn and Compton Place.

Walk 2. Upperton, including Upperton Gardens, Selwyn Road, Mill Road, Ocklynge Avenue, Crown Street and Moatcroft Road.

Walk 3. Town Centre, including Devonshire Place, Grand Parade, Western Lawns, Wish Tower, Bandstand, Carpet Gardens and All Souls' Church.

Walk 4. Lower Meads, including Grove Road, Town Hall, South Street, St Saviour's Church, Eastbourne College, Compton Street and Devonshire Park.

Walk 5. Hampden Park, including the Arboretum and History Garden, War Memorial, Sensory Garden, Ham Shaw and Decoy Pond.

Walk 6. Eastern Seafront, including the Pier, Sea Houses, Marine Parade, Marine Gardens, Royal Parade, Warrior Square and Redoubt Fortress.

Walk 7. Meads, including Saffrons, Meads Road, Meads Street, The Village, #St Andrew's School, All Saints and St John's Church.

Walk 8. Western Parades, including the Western Lawns, Holywell Retreat, Pinnacle Point, Whitbread Hole, Cow Gap, Prince's Seat and All Saints.

Walk 9. Sovereign Harbour, including the Redoubt Fortress, Fishing Station, Princes Park, Sovereign Park, Martello Towers, The Harbours.. 

The walks have been brought up to date by Eastbourne Society members Frances Muncey, Nicholas Howell and Janet Taylor, and the pack has an introduction by local historian Lawrence Stevens. The photographs are the work of Michael Kaye and Nicholas Howell.

Eastbourne Borough Council and Eastbourne Hospitality Association helped meet the cost of producing Heritage Walks and contributions were also received from sponsors The Hydro Hotel, St Andrew's School, the Langham Hotel, Manor Creative, Rager and Roberts, W.Bruford, Crowning Glory Hair Stylists and Waitrose.

The nine-walk set costs £3 and is available from the Tourist Information Centre, Waterstones, the Heritage Centre in Carlisle Road, the Library and various hotels.
